Still haven't decided where to do your exchange? Here are five beautiful cities to study abroad in, so you can pick the one that matches your personality best.

Washington, D.C.

The U.S. capital is the ultimate destination for anyone interested in politics, history, and culture and, of course, for anyone looking to sharpen their English.

Right after Michigan, it ranks among the most educated areas in the country, constantly offering free lectures, panels, and talks organized by leading institutions and world-class universities.

Among its premier higher-education institutions is Georgetown University, founded in 1789. Renowned as one of the finest universities globally, its halls have hosted notable alumni such as Bill Clinton and King Felipe VI of Spain.

Just outside the city lies the University of Maryland, widely recognized for its global leadership in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Among the prominent figures who have walked its campus is the celebrated Spanish author and Nobel laureate Juan Ramón Jiménez.

Utrecht

One of the most picturesque and vibrant university cities in Europe, Utrecht is home to an overwhelmingly youthful population, with the vast majority under the age of 30.

The city hosts the largest university in the Netherlands and stands as a major economic and industrial powerhouse for the country.

Utrecht also stands out for its wide range of scholarship and funding opportunities, paired with a cutting-edge reputation in research, innovation, and technological breakthroughs.

Vancouver

This city stands out for its high standard of living, outstanding public services, advanced education system, and low crime rates.

As Canada's third-largest city, Vancouver consistently ranks among the cleanest and safest cities in the world, boasting globally recognized economic stability and a thriving job market.

Beyond being multicultural, welcoming, and open-minded, it features an abundance of parks, coastal rainforests, and lush green spaces right at your doorstep.

Berlin

Diverse and steeped in history and culture, Berlin is one of the most sought-after study-abroad destinations for university students worldwide.

The city boasts a vibrant cultural scene home to at least 138 cultural institutions and over 400 art galleries.

To top it off, it’s a phenomenal choice for anyone looking to learn a new language. German is the mother tongue of around 100 million people, the most widely spoken native language in the European Union, and the second most frequently used language in scientific publications.

Barcelona

My absolute favorite among these five incredible cities is multicultural, modern, and young at heart. It is also one of the most popular destinations for international exchange students, thanks to its wide range of top-tier academic programs.

Barcelona is especially attractive for postgraduate and master’s studies because tuition fees are significantly lower compared to many other regions in the European Union. The vast majority of institutions are public and subsidized, making quality higher education genuinely affordable.

To top it all off, the weather is delightful for most of the year, and the city offers an endless, vibrant mix of cultural, social, and student life.

A key perk to keep in mind: its public healthcare system is outstanding, universally accessible, and free of charge.
